The issue of fireworks safety has been the subject of debates over the years. Every year, about a hundred or more gets injured because of fireworks. Most of the victims need to have their parts amputated due to the impact of blasts, while some results in untimely deaths.
Getting injured is not the only concern with the safety of using fireworks. As known to many, fireworks consist of inflammable materials. This runs the risk of causing fire. This is especially when fireworks are poorly stored. A vivid example is the incident way back 2007, when several stores in the Philippines were burned, in the season of Christmas.
To address the problem, several countries mandated new laws and regulated the use of fireworks in their country. In the United States, it is the individual State which will regulate the use of the fireworks.
The National Council on Fireworks Safety is a US-based organization that aims to promote fireworks safety. Below is a list of their advice in handling fireworks.
· Fireworks should not be lit indoors especially sparklers. Doing so, is potentially hazardous to people and his properties; and may cause fire when thrown into flammable materials or surfaces. Moreover, smoke that is being emitted during the process can be highly dangerous too since it is in a closed area, where suffocation likely happens.
· Only persons who are over 12 are to be allowed in handling sparklers since these fireworks can cause injury if handled incorrectly. This is true since most of the children below the said age do not much have the understanding as to the effects of fireworks.
· People shouldn’t mix drinking alcohol and lighting fireworks. Drinking alcohol slows down a person’s reaction time and could be dangerous when handling fireworks. There are several incidents recorded where a drunk person got his hands amputated since he forgot to free the fireworks before it blasted.
· Finally, people are told to use their common sense. A little bit of caution is also encouraged not only when lighting the fireworks but also to bear in mind the safety of children who might be around in the area of blasting.
It is however sad to think that there are also innocent people who got injured because of the recklessness of the person who had lighted the fireworks. To ensure safety, be alert when someone uses fireworks and have the children stayed indoors or off the area.
