from: What Are Fireworks

Fireworks became commonly known when people started its use for celebrations and events. The lighting effects and the sounds add to the excitement of the spectators and becomes one of the highlights of the event. These fireworks give off bright and colorful lights which never fail to give people a sense of awe and wonder.

But what are fireworks in the first place?

A firework is classified as a low explosive pyrotechnic device used primarily for aesthetic and entertainment purposes, though became traditionally known in ancient China to frighten evil spirits, its modern use have expanded into new ones and also lead to the much awaiting event of many- the fireworks display.

Fireworks can create several visual effects like the colors and its motions. Colors are produced as an effect of using certain compounds when exposed to flame.

Colors in fireworks are usually generated by pyrotechnic stars–usually just called stars–which produce intense light when ignited. Stars contain five basic types of ingredients: the fuel which allows the star to burn; an oxidizer; color producing chemicals, a binder which holds the pellets together; and a chlorine donor which provides chlorine to strengthen the color of the flame. Sometimes the oxidizer can serve this purpose.

For example, red is produced by putting strontium or lithium into the firework while a gold flame can be produced by using charcoal, iron or lampblack.

The brightest stars, often called Mag Stars, are fuelled by aluminium. Magnesium is rarely used in the fireworks industry due to its lack of ability to form a protective oxide layer. Often an alloy of both metals called magnalium is used.

Fireworks (devices) take many forms to produce the four primary effects: noise, light, smoke, and floating materials (confetti for example). They may be designed to burn with colored flames and sparks. Displays are common throughout the world and are the focal point of many different cultural and religious celebrations.

Fireworks are generally classified as to where they perform, either as a ground or aerial firework. In the latter case they may provide their own propulsion (skyrocket) or be shot into the air by a mortar (aerial shell).

Despite of the excitement that fireworks can bring, there’s the issue of safety. When handled incorrectly, fireworks can cause fire and even amputation of body parts especially in the case of more powerful varieties. Safe practices should therefore be done when handling them such as mechanically lighting them and keeping them away from flammable materials.
