from: Types of Fireworks

Multiple varieties of fireworks have been developed since they have been invented by the Chinese. Throughout the years, fireworks masters or modernly became known as pyrotechnics experts, have created different fireworks for public displays and for commercial use. You can even have someone design the fireworks with your name in the air!

But what are these fireworks and what are those that can be readily accessible in the market?

1. Firecrackers – this is the earliest type of firework created by the Chinese. It is basically a fused black powder packed in a tube. When lit, it produces loud noise. The loud noise is believed to scare away evil spirits in the ancient time.

2. Sparkler – as its name suggests, fireworks of this kind create a sparkling effect when lit. They burn brightly for a long time and give off sparks of light. These are the fireworks commonly used and made accessible to kids. However, parents are advise not to allow kids to use them since there are some that get blasted before it sparks.

3. Cake – is a type of firework which produces different sound and visual effects. A cake is a cluster of small tubes linked by fuse, that fire small aerial effects at a rapid pace. Tube diameters can range in size from ¼ inch to 4 inches, and can sometimes have over 1,000 shots. These are often used in large quantities as part of a show's finale. The variety of effects within individual cakes is often such that they defy descriptive titles and are instead given cryptic names such as "Bermuda Triangle", "Pyro Glyphics", "Waco Wakeup", and "Poisonous Spider", to name a few. Others are simply quantities of 2.5"-4" shells fused together in single-shot tubes.

4. Fountain – a type of firework which shoots up sparks several meters into the air.

5. Waterfalls – are probably one of the most fantastic types of fireworks out there. These are suspended and held by a rope and when lit, produce a big wall of light that resembles a waterfall.

6. Roman candle – a smaller version of the cake, the Roman candle shoots up balls of light in succession. A group of roman candles is called a battery and a fan-shaped one is called a bouquet.

7. Aerial shell – is another popular type of firework. The shell is shot in the air and bursts mid-flight. Patterns of colours are then created.

Some countries also take the types of fireworks based on the location it can be used or regulated to be used. These ranges from category one to four.

Category 1 - indoor fireworks, for use in small areas.

Category 2 - garden fireworks; must be safely viewable from 5 metres and must not scatter debris beyond 3 metres.

Category 3 - display fireworks; must be safely viewable from 25 metres and must not scatter debris beyond 50 metres.

Category 4 - professional fireworks; these require a license to use.

The types of fireworks may differ from one country to another and yet, these types of fireworks are maintained with safe pre-cautionary measures to ensure safety of the user and the spectators.
